We start with a local departure for our journey via coach to Germany and the breathtakingly beautiful Rhine Valley. We stay at the Hotel Wagner – an old Harry Shaw favourite. It is owned and run by Deiter and Andreas Wagner. It is set in the pleasant village of Kamp Bornhofen, set alongside the mighty Rhine itself, overlooked by 2 castles known locally as ‘the feuding brothers’. There is a bar and restaurant and all rooms have private facilities. The hotel has a lift from street level up to the patio and a second lift inside allows access to the bedrooms. However please note that it is not entirely suitable for the disabled as a number of stairs are always involved to gain access to the dining room.
Included Excursions:
- On 04 May, during the morning we have included a Rhine cruise. Please Note: It will be necessary for you to make your own way the short distance to the boat at Kamp Bornhofen. Tonight we have an early dinner before setting off for Bonn to see the spectacular ‘Rhine in Flames’ festival. The red florescent Bengal fire lights the way down stream for a fleet of more than 60 decorated and illuminated ships along the 26 km stretch – the longest stretch of any ‘Rhine in Flames’ event – from Linz to the city of Bonn from where we will see the spectacle. We return back to the hotel afterwards – this will be during the late evening or during the very early hours of day 2.
- A day exploring the Moselle Valley with visits to the historic wine town of Cochem. The small town is dominated by the majestic Reichburg Castle perched high upon a rock. There are pastel coloured buildings lining the waterfront and luscious green surroundings
- A visit to the famous and vibrant city of Cologne. Enjoy time at leisure. See the magnificent Dom – the Gothic Cathedral that dominates this fine city – and maybe enjoy the old town with its charming bars and restaurants
