Your Itinerary:

We start with a local departure and make our way north to the 3* Shap Wells Hotel which is ideally located in a secluded wooded valley high in the Shap Wells and surrounded by mountain streams.  All rooms are well appointed and features include a restaurant, bar and lounge.

During your stay we have included these great excursions:

  • Southern Lakes and cruise. First we visit the most famous town in the Lakes – Windermere.  We travel down the full length of the lake and on to Coniston Water, taking in some of the most picturesque villages in England – Coniston and delightful Hawkshead.  Return to Ambleside to enjoy an included atmospheric cruise to Bowness on Windermere.
  • Yorkshire Dales and the Settle to Carlisle Railway. A tour of England’s rugged Yorkshire Dales landscape along the wonderful Settle to Carlisle Railway.  We join the train at the village of Settle and venture on to Appleby over the magnificent viaduct, through hand hewn gorges and tunnels – set upon the backdrop of a stunning panorama.  We join the coach and continue to Carlisle – here you can visit the castle, the cathedral and the vibrant mix of shops.  Time permitting we journey on over the border to Gretna Green – famed for the Marriage Room and the legendary anvil at the Old Blacksmiths – a great place to get your Scottish shortbread as a souvenir.  (Please note – train journey may be operated in reverse and trains are diesel – not steam).
  • The Northern Lakes – there is spectacular scenery from rugged mountains to lakes and villages along the valley floors. We travel past the tranquil waters of Ullswater to Patterdale and over the magnificent Kirkstone Pass.  We travel on to Ambleside and Grasmere.  There is a chance to visit Dove Cottage – the former home of Wordsworth.  We travel north along the banks of Thirlmere and on to Keswick, nestled on the shores of Derwent Water.
